Welcome to the 2001 swim season!  While you were busy with soccer, football basketball, and other winter activities, the Orca Board has been planning for the upcoming season.  As you know, the City of San Rafael is building us a brand new pool! Our old pool has given us 40+ years of pleasure, but A was old and tired, and wasn't able to keep up with the times. Our new pool will provide us with many more opportunities for water sports, and will be a real asset to our community.

Many thanks to Dave Johnson, who attended all the City meetings and worked hard to ensure a successful swim team future. Also, thanks to Dave Hill, Mike McGuire, and Chris Oakes for all their efforts in this challenging endeavor.

The new pool will have more lanes for less congested swim practices and faster meets, and a deeper depth to accommodate water polo. There will be a water play structure for the kids, landscaping, and other new features.

Our continuing goal is to build a future for our team and we're doing it by maintaining a long-tem consistent coaching staff and a new pool that offers more aquatic opportunities.

While the new pool is being constructed this summer, we have arranged with the San Rafael School District to utilize their high school pools (Terra Linda and San Rafael) for our practices and meets. Both of their pools are in need of repair, but they are coordinating this effort with us and their other swim team members.

Coaches Dave Johnson and Alon Golan are back for their fourth season! We are so lucky to have these two professional swim coaches again this year. Those of us who have been on the team since they started can see the improvement they have made with our swimmers. We can only imagine what they will accomplish this year!

We were all sorry to say good-bye to our assistant coach, Jen Arnold. She moved to Oregon, and we all miss her.

Welcome to our new assistant coach, Liz Dembski. Liz was once an Orca swimmer, and we know that all our members will benefit from her knowledge and enthusiasm.

See you at Splash Day!

Coaches' corner

Orcas, wake up! Your winter hibernation is coming to an end. The 2001 season is rapidly approaching and it promises to be our absolute best ever.

Last season was an incredible success. We won a lot of meets, we enjoyed a great Championship Meet and we had a ton of fun. This upcoming year we will use this positive momentum and keep it rolling. I am more confident than ever that we will be able to do this and I can't wait to get started!

Each and every year we get better and stronger and faster. My coaching staff firmly believes that the best way to improve swimming is by working on various techniques such as swimming, diving, stroking and turning. This is not always the fastest way in the short term, but it works best for the long haul. Each year the payoff gets bigger!

Prepare yourselves for an awesome season! Plan ahead for what you will do when your goals become a reality. Realize today that you are capable of great achievements because you are! Start imagining how you will feel when you start swimming faster than ever. Think the thoughts you will have once you actually do with your body what is now only in your mind. Once you can do this is really believe in yourself, you are closer than you could ever imagine to your dreams. Please open up this year and really approach the season with a mindset that has absolutely no limits.

See you in the pool!

Hey Orcas! Have you noticed the days are getting longer warmer? Spring is near and that means soon it will be Orca season! You guys were awesome last year. Let's do it again this year!

This season, with the Terra Linda Rec Center pool closed for remodel-ing, we get to swim at the T.L High School pool and maybe some other local pools, too. I know that Orcas are highly adaptable creatures, comfortable in any aquatic environment. So with your strong Orca spirit and love of swimming, you'll quickly feel at home no matter where we swim

What else is new this year? Liz Dembski! She's our new assistant coach. She swam for the Orcas a few years back. She’s also the older sister of Orca All-Star Gabrielle Dembski. Liz loves working with kids and is excited to be an Orca again. Come meet Liz and all your fellow Orcas at Splash Day! See you there.
